What’s your most memorable Halloween experience?

One Halloween in grad school, my friends Amanda, Thomas, and I borrowed a retro empty apartment with stained carpet, candles, and four tall mirrors. Amanda was a witch, I a vampire, Thomas was a warlock, and led us in a ritual with tarot cards. Later we crept to the psych department’s haunted elevator shaft, doing another reading in the endless hallway. Thomas and I wrote a ghost story about the shaft, printed 500 copies, burned the edges, and planted them across campus to leave behind a legend.

Tell us why you would make it to the end of a horror movie.

I’d make it to the end of a horror movie because I don’t just scream and run…I analyze, adapt, and outsmart. The villains would underestimate me, but I’d turn fear into strategy, using wit, sarcasm, and stubborn grit to stay alive. I wouldn’t be the strongest or fastest, but the one still standing, because clever girls know how to survive. It’s all about paying attention to gut, detail, and self-awareness.

What would you do with the unlucky $13,000?

If I won the unlucky $13,000, I’d do the most cursed thing possible - be practical. Rent, bills, gas, groceries would be paid. A slice for my research lab (I study eyewitness memory and identification) and for a trip to Greece, plan a next trip, and maybe a nice few dinners with my partner, some fun adventures with his boys, while my cats would get a vet visit and some new toys. Bad luck can’t haunt money that’s keeping the lights on and helping others.

Who is your real-life hero who you would want to survive a horror movie with?

Merlin Sheldrake is my real-life hero - the one I’d want by my side in a horror movie. He’s the author of the novel Entangled Life. And if The Last of Us taught us anything, it’s that fungi run the show, so who better to survive with than the man who literally wrote the book on them? He’d decode spores, outsmart cordyceps, and remind me that even in apocalypse, life finds strange, tangled ways to persist. Knowledge is the ultimate weapon, and Merlin would know how to keep us alive.
